At the Trauma
Treatment Center of Colorado, Dr. Leigh Baker, Psy.D.,
and her didicated staff treat victims and their families.
Daily they ask themselves, "When will this end?" "What
is so terribly wrong with our society that we continue
to victimize our children in the most shameful and prohibited
manner?" they ask.
At the Trauma Treatment Center the phone continues to ring daily
with new intakes of parents who are in various stages of shock,
anger, pain or frustration seeking appointments. For more than
a decade Dr. Baker has heard parents lament:
"
Please see my child, I am afraid of what is happening."
"
I don't feel the same anymore."
"
I can't stop crying and I"m having these terrible dreams."
Dr. Baker says she and her staff theorize about the western culture
to find a reason for the widespread occurrence of crimes committed
against children. After studying the demographics of abuse they
have found it claims no socioeconomic, ethnic, religious or educational
distinction. Child abuse is found in the wealthiest homes among
the most learned in our nation and even in the most religiously
devout households. Child abuse and incest in particular, has
existed since the early stages of civilization. Even the Bible
clearly prohibits this abuse; that children should not be used
to meet adult needs for intimacy.
The purpose of the handbook, When Your Child's Been Abused and
its companion facilitatior's manual for professionals, is not
to delve into the reasons adults abuse children, but to help
in the treatment of families and the steady stream of child survivors.
Dr. Baker says she believes that by making the public more aware
of the widespread incidence of child abuse and how our society
both silently condones and openly permits the exploitation of
children, we can move closer to solving this problem.
For Families who use the manual and successfully complete their
course of treatment, Dr. Baker says she is "Thanked profusely
for the help that I have given them." She has written this manual
and its companion as a resource to help parents there who aer
also suffering but may not know what aid is available, and the
professionals who would help them.
